  • PUHSD Governing Board Calls for November District Additional Assistance Override Election

In June, the Phoenix Union High School District Governing Board unanimously approved a resolution to call for a District Additional Assistance (DAA) Budget Override Election, November 3.  The DAA Budget Override, formerly called a Capital Outlay Override,  allows a school district to levy a tax to pay for capital needs that cannot be met by the District’s regular capital budget. The election was called in response to the State Legislature’s 85% reduction in the District’s capital funding in recent years.

  • Phoenix Union Accredited by AdvancED
The AdvancED Accreditation External Review team spent three days in Phoenix, February 9-11, to complete their evaluation of the District. The six-person team met and interviewed 216 people including board members, administrators, teachers, support staff, students, parents, business and community stakeholders, and visited six schools.
The review concluded with a special board meeting, February 11, in which AdvancED recommended Accreditation for Phoenix Union High School District. Lead evaluator Bill Rivenbark explained that accreditation is not to find out if a “school district is good enough, but rather to see that it is continuously improving.” Using an Index of Educational Quality, or IEQ, evaluating Teaching/Learning Impact; Leadership Capacity and Resource Utilization, Phoenix Union was above the national average in two of the three-Teaching Impact and Leadership Capacity.
A more detailed report will follow, with recommendations for continuous improvement, and the District has two years to respond to those recommendations in a written report. Accreditation takes place every five years. However, this is the first time the entire District was accredited at one time.
